Antiviral therapeutics developer Chimerix Inc. has named Dr. Gwendolyn Powell Painter, a consultant to the company for the past eight years, as its new chief medical officer.

Prior to her career as a drug development consultant to biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, Painter was medical director at GlaxoSmithKline PLC.

Chimerix, based in Durham, N.C., is working to develop antiviral therapeutics for diseases including cytomegalovirus, BK virus, smallpox, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C virus, respiratory syncytial virus and influenza. Its lead compound, CMX001, is in Phase I and II trials for the treatment of cytomegalovirus and BK virus.

In August the company closed its Series E round at a post-money valuation of $85 million. The company had raised a total of $90 million including the Series E - $56 million through private investors and $34 million in government grants.

Investors include Alta Partners, Asset Management Co., Canaan Partners, Frazier Healthcare Ventures and Sanderling Ventures.
