Robert Alexander Joins Alta Partners as Principal

Firm Expands Clinical and Operational Expertise
San Francisco, CA., November 7, 2005 – Alta Partners, a life sciences and information technology
venture capital firm based in San Francisco, today announced that Robert Alexander had joined the
firm as a Principal. Alexander brings over a decade of life sciences investment, operations and
research experience.
“Robert’s technical knowledge, as well as his business development and life sciences investing
expertise are a great fit for our team,” said Dan Janney, Managing Director at Alta Partners. “He will
bring significant value to our investing process and to our portfolio across the spectrum, from early to
later stage opportunities.”
Prior to Alta, Robert was a Principal in MPM Capital's BioEquities fund where he sourced opportunities
and led due diligence efforts for both public and private investments. Robert joined MPM from
Genentech where he spent over three years in Business Development. At Genentech, his
responsibilities included sourcing and screening product opportunities based on scientific merit and
strategic fit, leading diligence teams and negotiating terms and definitive agreements. Prior to joining
Genentech, Robert was a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University in the department of Pathology.
He holds a Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of North Carolina and a B.A. degree in Zoology
from Miami University of Ohio.
